Except for the muffled whoosh of cool, blowing air, any other sounds being made by your air conditioner will probably grab your attention. In general, a correctly functioning air conditioning unit is designed to not disturb household peace and quiet, so when something sounds out of the ordinary, it is very noticeable. Here are some atypical sounds you may hear from your air conditioner, and what may be causing them.
Screeches and Squeals
These noises typically signal a problem with moving parts, limiting the most likely sources to the fan belt, blower fan, or pulleys located in the indoor air handler. If the tension of the fan belt is insufficient or the belt itself shows excessive wear or deterioration, it may be slipping out of position. While blower fan bearings can be lubricated by a qualified A/C technician, a squealing or squeaking blower motor often needs to be replaced.
Loud Rattles or Banging
If these sounds occur when the system is cycled on, it is likely to be a loose blower motor, damaged bearings or other related components. Nearly always, these sounds are a sign of a problem that will only get worse if not rectified. Its wise to turn the system off, and contact Clarke & Rush for expert help.
Clicking Sounds From the Outdoor Components
If you hear a rapid succession of loud clicks coming from the outside half of the central A/C system before the unit starts, it is usually worn or corroded contacts that switch high-voltage electricity to the compressor when the thermostat signals it to come on. Eventually, you will hear only clicks and get no cooling. Call your local qualified heating/cooling contractor, like Clarke & Rush now.
Screaming Compressor
You will know this sound when you hear it, and so will the whole neighborhood. A failing compressor usually makes a loud screaming sound when the internal pressure reaches damaging levels. Internal safety sensors should instantly shut the system down. If they don’t, do it yourself quickly. Switch the thermostat to “off” and get professional help from an HVAC expert.
